“The term ‘manifesto’ is very fruitful and also very male, so to see it take a feminine shape, to use it as a tool to communicate femininity, I believe that is very interesting.”
-Stefano Pilati in conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist
Before YSL lost its “Y” Stefano Pilati was colliding sumptuous luxury and modernist attitude at the helm of the storied house. Shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, Pilati’s “Manfiesto” mailings were an ideological source code that accompanied each of his Yves Saint Laurent womenswear collections. The series of poster books with accompanying tote bags are the ultimate Pilati YSL artifact. The AW09 book features Christy Turlington posing inside of a giant iron YSL monogram, in an ode to geometric precision that tastes like Russian Constructivism with a distinct splash of BDSM.
