The German playwright and poet Bertolt Brecht lived in exile in Denmark for the six years leading up to World War II. Among the family and friends that frequented his home in Svendborg was Walter Benjamin, a close collaborator to Brecht as both writers reached a creative peak at a time of totalitarian oppression. Eighty years later, in fall 2018, reproductions of one of Brecht’s Svendborg poems started to appear on our feeds. A call for song despite darkness, the poem crystallized into a raison d’être for creative work in the twilight of the late 2010s.
A photograph of the magnetic Brecht – dressed in leather, cigar-in-mouth – features on the front of the 032c “Dark Times" Bertolt Brecht T-Shirt, and his still-resonant words are printed on the back.
